What Does Leather Restoration Include?

Leather restoration cleans, rehydrates and protects the leather surfaces in a vehicle. Deep cleaning lifts body oils, denim dye transfer and sunscreen residue out of the leather grain. Conditioning returns flexibility to hide that has dried out. A UV protectant slows the fading and surface cracking that direct sun causes through the glass.

Glam Detailing performs leather restoration in Calgary at the customer's own address, treating seats, steering wheel, door cards, centre console and shift surround. Glam Detailing identifies the finish on each panel before cleaning, because coated leather, aniline leather and vinyl each require different products. Glam Detailing uses pH-balanced cleaners rather than all-purpose products, which strip the protective coating that modern automotive leather depends on.

This is a detailing service, not an upholstery repair service. It transforms leather that is dirty, dry or dull. It cannot replace material that is torn, split or worn through — and further down this page we explain exactly where that line sits, and who to call when your seats are on the other side of it.

How Much Does Leather Restoration Cost in Calgary?

Leather cleaning, conditioning and protection starts at $120 at Glam Detailing for a standard vehicle. Leather treatment is already included in the Advanced Interior Detail at $185 and the Glam Up Interior Detail at $265 — so if the rest of the interior also needs work, the package is better value than booking leather on its own.

Worth understanding before you compare quotes: "leather repair" in Calgary covers two different trades at very different prices. Detailing restores the appearance of sound leather and is priced in the low hundreds. Upholstery repair rebuilds damaged leather — filling, re-dyeing, replacing panels — and runs several hundred per seat, because it is skilled remedial work. A quote that looks unusually high is probably the second trade answering a question about the first.

🧼 Straight Answer

How Do You Clean Leather Car Seats?

Vacuum the seams and perforations first, then work a pH-balanced leather cleaner into one panel at a time with a microfibre cloth or soft horsehair brush, wiping the lifted residue away before it dries. Finish with a conditioner. The single biggest mistake is the product choice: most modern car leather is polyurethane-coated, and household cleaners attack that coating rather than the hide beneath it.

Use these

  • A pH-balanced cleaner made for automotive leather
  • A soft horsehair brush to agitate the grain
  • Clean microfibre — one cloth to clean, a second to wipe
  • A dedicated leather conditioner afterwards, every time
  • A vacuum with a crevice tool, before you wet anything

Never use these

  • All-purpose cleaner — strips the protective coating
  • Dish soap — removes the oils the hide needs
  • Baby wipes — the alcohol dries and hazes the finish
  • Magic erasers — micro-abrasive, they sand the coating off
  • Vinegar — acidic, and it dulls coated leather permanently

The shiny patch on the driver's bolster is not wear — it is usually damage. That glossy area where the finish looks polished is what remains after a household cleaner or an abrasive pad has removed the matte topcoat. It cannot be cleaned back to matte, only re-dyed. This is the most common self-inflicted leather problem we are called to look at, and it is entirely avoidable.

🕳 Ventilated Seats

How Do You Clean Perforated or Ventilated Leather Seats?

Never spray cleaner directly onto perforated leather. The liquid runs straight through the holes into the ventilation channels and seat foam underneath, where it has no way to dry. Spray onto the cloth or brush instead, work with light pressure, and vacuum the perforations before and after rather than pushing residue down into them.

Perforated and ventilated seats are standard on most higher-trim vehicles now, and they are the interior surface most often damaged by well-intentioned cleaning. Soaked seat foam takes days to dry in a sealed cabin. In Calgary that most often happens over a winter weekend, and what the owner notices the following week is a musty smell from the seat base that no amount of surface cleaning fixes — because the problem is under the leather, not on it.

There is a second failure mode worth knowing about: conditioner pooling in the holes. Applied heavily to perforated leather, conditioner sits in each perforation, dries to a visible ring, and then attracts dust to exactly those spots. Perforated panels need a light application and a thorough buff — noticeably less product than a solid panel, not more.

🔍 Honest Assessment

Can Cracked Leather Car Seats Be Repaired?

It depends which layer has failed. Surface cracking in the finish — dry, crazed, but intact — improves substantially with deep cleaning and conditioning, because the hide beneath is still sound. Cracks that have split through the hide, along with tears, holes and worn-through bolsters, are structural damage. Cleaning cannot reverse those, and no honest detailer will tell you otherwise.

Detailing will fix this

  • Dry, stiff leather that has lost its softness
  • Fine surface crazing that has not split through
  • Blue or grey denim dye transfer on light seats
  • Body oil buildup and shine on headrests and bolsters
  • General dulling, grime and a tired flat appearance
  • Faded but structurally intact panels

This needs an upholstery specialist

  • Cracks split through to the backing material
  • Tears, punctures or cigarette burns
  • Bolsters worn through to the foam
  • Colour worn off down to the base hide
  • Set sunscreen staining that has discoloured the coating
  • Seams that have come apart at the stitching

We would rather tell you before the appointment than take payment for a treatment that will not deliver. Send a photo of the worst panel in daylight and we will say which column your seats fall into — including when the answer is that you need a leather repair specialist rather than us.

📅 Frequency

How Often Should Leather Car Seats Be Conditioned in Calgary?

Every three to four months in Calgary — more often than the six-month interval usually quoted, and the reason is climate rather than caution. Calgary sits at low relative humidity year-round, and indoor and in-cabin air gets drier still in winter. Dry air pulls moisture out of hide, and dry hide is what cracks.

  • Low humidity, all yearCalgary is one of the driest major cities in Canada. Leather conditioning intervals printed on a bottle are written for average conditions, and the average is considerably more humid than here. Hide that would stay supple for six months elsewhere stiffens faster in this climate.
  • Parked-car heat in summerA closed vehicle in direct sun reaches interior temperatures far above the outside air. Heat accelerates the moisture loss that low humidity starts, and it does it fastest on the surfaces in direct sun — the top of the dash, the shoulder of the front seats, the steering wheel.
  • Winter salt and grit, tracked inCalgary road salt arrives on boots and ends up ground into the lower seat bolsters and the sill-side of the seat base every time you get in. Salt is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture out of leather it sits on, then works as an abrasive under the next person who slides across the seat.

The driver's outer bolster and the steering wheel always go first, because they take the most contact and the most sun. If those two surfaces feel dry or look dull compared with the passenger side, the interior is already past due — that asymmetry is the earliest reliable signal, and it shows well before any visible cracking.

⚖️ Value

Is Leather Restoration Worth It?

On leather that is dirty, dry or dull, it is one of the highest-value details available — the driver's seat and the steering wheel are the first things anyone touches, whether that is you every morning or a buyer on a test drive. On leather that is torn or worn through, it is not worth it on its own, because cleaning cannot restore material that is gone.

The selling case is the straightforward one. A tired interior is the fastest way a private buyer talks a price down, and leather is the surface they judge it by. Restoring the seats and wheel before listing costs a fraction of what the negotiation costs — and it photographs, which matters more than most sellers expect on a marketplace listing.

The keeping case is quieter but adds up to more. Conditioning is preventive maintenance on a component that is expensive to replace: a single re-dyed or re-covered seat panel costs several times a full interior treatment, and once the hide has cracked through there is no cheaper route back. Three appointments a year is materially less than one repaired bolster.

⚙️ Our Process

How We Restore Leather

The order matters more than the products. Grit comes out before anything gets wet — cleaning solution applied over trapped grit turns the cloth into an abrasive and scours the finish it is supposed to be saving.

  1. Assess the hide, panel by panelWe check finish type, dye transfer, dryness and cracking on every surface. Coated leather, aniline leather and vinyl take different products, and a vehicle often has more than one — the seats and the door cards are frequently not the same material despite looking identical.
  2. Dry removal firstSeams, stitch lines and perforations are vacuumed before any liquid is introduced. This is the step that protects the finish, and it is the one most commonly skipped.
  3. Deep clean with agitationA pH-balanced cleaner is worked into the grain with a soft horsehair brush. Leather texture holds soil down in the pattern, so wiping alone moves it around instead of lifting it. Denim dye transfer in particular only releases with agitation.
  4. Condition and rehydrateConditioner goes on and is given time to absorb rather than being wiped straight back off. Excess is then buffed away — leather should feel supple and matte afterwards, never greasy, and a seat that feels slippery has been over-conditioned.
  5. UV protectionA matte protectant slows the fading and cracking that sun through the windshield causes. Matte deliberately: high-gloss dressings on seats look wrong, create windshield glare, and make the surface slick to sit on.

❓ Common Questions

Leather Restoration FAQs

How do you get sunscreen out of leather car seats?

Quickly, is the short answer. The avobenzone and titanium dioxide in sunscreen react with the polyurethane coating on modern automotive leather and cause yellow or orange staining once they set — on light-coloured interiors it is one of the hardest marks to remove.

Fresh residue lifts with a pH-balanced leather cleaner and gentle brush agitation. Once the stain has discoloured the coating itself it usually cannot be cleaned out, and re-dyeing by a leather repair specialist is the only route back. If it happened this week, book sooner rather than later.

How do I remove denim dye transfer from light leather seats?

Blue-grey shading on cream, tan or white seats is dye migrating out of dark denim, and it is extremely common on the driver's seat and outer bolster. It sits in the grain texture rather than on top of it, which is why wiping does almost nothing.

It releases with a pH-balanced cleaner and brush agitation, often across several light passes rather than one aggressive one. Caught early it comes out completely. Left for a season or two it becomes progressively harder, and heavy long-term transfer may only lighten rather than clear.

Is it safe to use a steam cleaner on leather seats?

Not on automotive leather, no. Steam is excellent on fabric upholstery and carpet, which is why detailers reach for it. On coated leather the heat and moisture can soften and lift the polyurethane finish, and on perforated seats it drives moisture straight into the ventilation channels.

Leather is cleaned with controlled product and mechanical agitation, not heat. If a quote includes steaming the leather seats, ask what they are steaming with and at what temperature.

How long does the leather service take?

Between one and a half and two and a half hours for a standard vehicle, depending on how many leather surfaces there are and how heavily soiled they are. A two-seat interior with light wear is at the short end; a seven-seat SUV with leather on all three rows and heavy dye transfer is at the long end. We work at your location, so you can carry on with your day.

Will conditioning make my seats slippery or shiny?

Not when it is applied correctly. Slippery seats are the signature of over-application — conditioner left on the surface instead of allowed to absorb and then buffed off. Properly conditioned leather feels supple and dry to the touch, with a matte finish rather than a gloss.

We use matte protectants deliberately. Glossy seat dressings look wrong on automotive leather, throw glare onto the windshield in low sun, and make the surface genuinely less safe to sit on.

Can you treat vinyl and synthetic leather too?

Yes, and a large share of what people call leather is actually a synthetic — most manufacturers use one on the door cards, seat backs and lower panels even in vehicles advertised as leather-equipped. Synthetics need a different product: they cannot absorb conditioner the way hide does, so a leather conditioner just sits on the surface and attracts dust.

We identify each surface before treating it, which is why a vehicle can leave with three different products on it and a uniform finish across all of them.

Should I do leather restoration before selling my car?

Yes, and it is one of the few pre-sale details that reliably pays for itself. The driver's seat and steering wheel are what a buyer touches within thirty seconds of getting in, and a tired interior is the most common lever used to talk a private-sale price down.

If you are preparing a vehicle for sale, a full interior detail with leather treatment included is the better value — buyers judge the whole cabin, not only the seats.

Do you offer mobile leather restoration across Calgary?

Yes — NW, NE, SW, SE and Downtown Calgary, plus Airdrie, Chestermere, Okotoks, Cochrane, Bearspaw and Rocky View. We bring every product and tool to your vehicle and no drop-off is needed. Because this is interior work, we run it year-round in any weather, provided the vehicle is accessible.
