Machine polishing that brings back gloss and depth on paint that is sound but flat — without cutting into clear coat you cannot get back. From $300, at your driveway.
Book Car Polishing →Car polishing is a single machine stage that refines the paint surface with a fine abrasive to restore gloss, depth and clarity. Polishing removes oxidation haze and light contamination film. Polishing prepares the surface so wax, sealant or coating bonds to clean paint rather than to dulled paint.
Glam Detailing performs car polishing in Calgary at the customer's own address, bringing its own power, polishers and inspection lighting. Glam Detailing positions polishing as the step below paint correction, because it refines the clear coat rather than cutting into it. Paint without significant defects does not need correction, and correcting it spends clear coat for no gain.
The one-line version: polishing improves how your paint looks. Correction changes what your paint is. Most people asking about polishing want the first thing, and it costs a lot less.
Car polishing in Calgary starts at $300 at Glam Detailing — a decontamination wash, a single-stage machine polish across every painted panel, and a protective sealant. Larger vehicles and heavily contaminated paint are quoted after a free assessment, so you are told the number before any machine touches the car.
Calgary quotes for a "polish" run from about $80 to $400, and that spread is not a spread in skill — it is a spread in what is actually being done. Under roughly $150 you are almost always buying a hand-applied glaze that fills defects with filler oils and washes out in two or three washes. A machine polish refines the paint surface itself, takes two to three hours of labour, and the result does not rinse off. We price at the working end of that range because the work is done properly, on site, with our own power and inspection lighting.
Polishing is worth it when the paint is sound but has lost its depth — it looks flat, the colour seems shallow, water no longer beads. It is also the right call before applying wax or sealant. It is not worth it if you can see swirl marks in direct sunlight, because polishing will not remove those and you will have paid for the wrong service.
Here is the two-minute test that tells you which service you need. Take the car into direct sunlight, or shine a phone torch on the paint in a dark garage at a low angle.
If it is the right-hand column, paint correction is the honest answer and we will quote that instead — polishing a swirled car just makes shiny swirls. If it is the left-hand column, correction would be overkill and would remove clear coat you do not need to lose.
Polishing is one stage with a fine abrasive that refines the surface. Correction is a multi-stage process that starts with a cutting compound to physically level the clear coat. The words get used interchangeably by people selling both, and the difference is several hundred dollars.
| Car polishing | Paint correction | |
|---|---|---|
| Stages | One — finishing polish | Two or three — cut, polish, refine |
| Removes oxidation haze | Yes | Yes |
| Removes swirl marks | Very light only | Yes |
| Removes scratches | No | Yes, within the clear coat |
| Removes etching | No | Yes |
| Clear coat removed | Minimal | A few microns per stage |
| Time | 2–3 hours | 4 hours to a full day |
| Cost | From $300 | $350–$800 |
| Right before a ceramic coating? | Only if paint is defect-free | Yes — the standard prep |
There is a reason we publish this table rather than letting the ambiguity ride. The two services sit close in price, so the decision should never be made on cost — it should be made on what your paint actually needs. Correction removes a few microns of clear coat per stage. Run on paint that only needed a finishing polish, that is clear coat spent for nothing, and clear coat does not grow back. If your paint does have swirls and scratches, correction is the right service and we will tell you so.
A single-stage polish removes oxidation haze, light water spotting, minor staining and the dulling film that builds on neglected paint. It softens very fine marring. It does not remove swirl marks, fingernail-catching scratches, bird-dropping etching, or rock chips.
The mechanism is worth understanding, because it explains the limit. Paint looks dull when the surface is microscopically irregular — light hits it and scatters in every direction instead of reflecting cleanly. A polish uses a fine abrasive to smooth that irregular surface at a scale you cannot see. Light then reflects straight back at you, and the eye reads that as depth and gloss.
A swirl mark is a different problem. It is not surface roughness — it is a groove with actual depth. To remove it you have to take the surrounding clear coat down to the bottom of that groove, which needs a cutting compound and more than one stage. A finishing polish simply glides over it, and afterwards you have a glossier car with the same swirls in it.
Calgary-specific: the most common reason paint here goes flat is not scratching, it is winter. Five months of calcium chloride brine and road film bond to the clear coat, and washing alone does not fully strip it. A decontamination and polish in April is what most Calgary cars actually need in spring — not correction, and certainly not annually.
If you are unsure which category your paint falls into, send a photo taken in direct sunlight before booking. We would rather redirect you to the lighter service than have you pay for clear coat removal your paint never needed.
The polish itself is permanent — the surface has been refined and stays refined. What determines how long it looks polished is the protection applied over it and how the car is washed. Bare polished paint starts dulling within a couple of months as contamination rebuilds.
| Protection applied over the polish | How long the gloss holds |
|---|---|
| Nothing | 6–10 weeks before contamination dulls it again |
| Carnauba wax | 2–3 months, warmer glow, needs redoing |
| Paint sealant (included in our polish) | 4–6 months, better winter resistance |
| Ceramic coating | 2 years to lifetime, depending on package |
The washing habit matters as much as the product. An automated brush wash will put fresh marring into freshly polished paint on the first pass — which is genuinely frustrating to watch happen a week after the appointment. Two buckets with a grit guard, or a touchless wash, and a clean plush microfibre to dry.
Our polish includes a sealant as standard, which is why we quote 4 to 6 months rather than 6 to 10 weeks. If you want longer than that, the honest recommendation is a coating rather than repeat polishing — every polish takes a little clear coat, and repeating it three times a year is not a maintenance plan, it is attrition.
Polishing contaminated paint grinds the contamination into the surface. That is why the wash and decontamination are not optional preamble — they are half the reason the result holds.
Total time is two to three hours for a standard vehicle, up to four on a large SUV or crew-cab truck. You do not need to be present once we have access.

We polish at your address across Calgary, arriving with our own power, polishers and inspection lighting. No travel fee inside city limits, and the same price in every quadrant.
A garage or parkade is ideal — controlled lighting shows the finish accurately and no dust settles onto freshly polished panels. A sheltered driveway works in stable weather. What does not work is wind, rain or near-freezing temperatures, and we will say so rather than deliver a compromised result.
Coverage across NW, NE, SW, SE and downtown Calgary as part of our mobile detailing service. Airdrie, Chestermere and Okotoks with a small travel charge.
Yes, some machine work should come first. Wax and coatings are transparent and bond over the surface as they find it, so applying them to dull paint locks that in. For sound paint a single-stage polish is enough. For paint with visible swirls, full correction is needed before a multi-year coating — because the coating preserves whatever is underneath for its entire life.

A single-stage finishing polish with a dual-action machine removes a very small amount of clear coat — far less than a correction stage. The risk is low, which is exactly why it is the right service for paint that does not need more. What we will not do is polish repeatedly on a schedule; clear coat is finite and there is no reason to spend it on a car that does not need it.
Not the ones you are thinking of. If a scratch catches your fingernail, no. If it is visible as a distinct line rather than general haze, generally no. Polishing removes haze, oxidation and very fine marring. Anything with actual depth needs correction.
Yes, and those are the best environments for it — stable temperature, controlled lighting to check the finish, and no wind carrying dust onto wet panels. A sheltered driveway works in good weather. We confirm your space is suitable when you book.
The Glam Up Full Detail includes a paint sealant application, which protects the paint but is not the same as a machine polish. If you want the gloss restored as well as protected, add polishing to the appointment — it is cheaper booked together, because the decontamination wash only happens once.
No automated brush washes — they will mar freshly polished paint on the first pass. Two buckets with a grit guard, or a touchless wash. Dry with clean plush microfibre rather than dragging a chamois across the panel.
